With approximately 400 million monthly active users, 3.5 billion likes, and 80 million photos uploaded a day, Instagram has become the ‘It’ app for people of all ages. Instagrammed locations vary, from snapping selfies in front of artwork, documenting boozy brunches, photographing tropical vacations, to any other photo that captures a moment of your perfectly curated life.
Some users tend to use the platform as an outlet for displaying their creative side, while others showcase every aspect of their personal lives – both the mundane and exciting. However, apparently there are some favored locations across the U.S. that both parties choose to shoot, filter, and post on Instagram.
The traveling site, BusBud recently studied the most Instagrammed locations across North America. “Using the location, type, and name of the popular locations on TripAdvisor across the United States and Canada, we looked at which locations produced the most hashtags for Instagram posts and ranked them in every state, province, and territory.”
The interactive map of the U.S. breaks down each state by color, in accordance with one of the following categories; arenas, body of water, universities, zoos, auto racetracks, beaches, landmarks, theme parks, or national parks.

But what if we told you that you physically couldn’t take a picture of any of these extremely Instagram-able locations? German innovator, Philipp Schmitt, recently invented an actual camera that restricts users from taking overly documented photos. The “Camera Restrica” looks pretty old-school, but the invention is routed through a built-in GPS, monitoring how many other photos are on the Internet with the same coordinates. If there are too many taken in your location, the shutter on the camera will close, preventing you from snapping a picture.
Although it may sound bizarre, the Camera Restrica could help photographers who seek for that truly unique photo not to get trapped in the vortex of the common man. While I don’t know his intentions, it’s nearly impossible to believe this camera wasn’t invented purely as a piece of social commentary.
