The Enoshima Aquarium – about an hour outside of Tokyo by car – is now home to a new projection-mapping installation by teamLab, Japan’s premiere digital creative studio.
Visitors to the aquarium’s Big Sagami Bay Tank can bear witness to Flowers and Fish, where images of flowers bloom on the bodies of fish as they glide through the water. The wide, flat bodies of the rays inhabiting the tank provide a particularly nice canvas for the ephemeral blossoms that are activated by movement in the tank. It’s a truly elegant visualization of two ecosystems impossibly yet believably intertwined, all dependent on the fish’s unwitting participation in participatory art.

teamLab’s pioneering work in the interplay of light, space, and movement has often taken inspiration from flora and (aquatic) fauna. Some of their past projects include 3D holographic fishing, a kinetic flower garden, and an aquarium populated by children’s drawings.
