When people hear of a ‘vigilante’ they often think of someone like Superman or Spiderman or maybe even the pulp-fiction Zorro.
Enter Alejandro Vigilante, the Buenos Aires-born, Miami-based artist who primarily works with multi-media digital art, which he classifies as “Neo-Pop”, “i-Pop”, or “iArt”. After working for many years in the Argentinean finance world, Vigilante was invited to be featured at Art Miami in 1995 and has continued his artistic career ever since. Now represented by Avant Gallery in Miami, he has been commissioned for mural backdrops for Oliver Stone films, charity work for the United Foundation for AIDS at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Tiffany & Company’s 2nd floor jewelry salon in Manhattan, and featured in numerous solo and group shows.
Vigilante’s latest work will be exhibited at the upcoming Affordable Art Fair in New York City. Most of his works combine the familiarity with mundane social media activity and our celebrity-obsessed culture, making his style both aesthetically pleasing and relatable.
Historically, as technology evolves so does the network of possibilities, subliminally connecting the average person with the lifestyles of the rich and famous, generation after generation. This ongoing fascination will only develop as social media activity increases, making Vigilante’s “iArt movement” work highly intriguing for future generations (ie: possible appreciation in value).
This is pretty commercial stuff, perfect for those who wish to collect Pop Art but can’t throw down the money for a Warhol. From Marilyn Monroe to Kate Moss and Mick Jagger, Vigilante’s obvious pop culture references make for some very playful pieces. The works that will be available at this year’s Affordable Art Fair are color-blocked, Apple icon-ed photos of the Beatles (see below).
