Have you ever played that game ‘who would you like to have lunch with, dead or alive’? I think we can all agree that Vincent van Gogh is pretty high up there in responses. You could chat about his sanity (or insanity) over a kale caesar, his artistic inspiration over falafel, Amsterdam in the 19th century over some green juice, or pretty much anything, really. And since bringing people back from the dead isn’t really a good idea, what if someone came up with the next best thing?
New York-based actor, Robert Reynolds, had a brief stint with internet-fame when a subway goer posted a picture of him side by side with Van Gogh on Reddit.com. The link was viewed over two million times in just four days which quickly inspired Reynolds and his friends to create a Youtube show, based on a modern Van Gogh in New York City.
The show, called The Van Gogh Show, has three one-minute episodes so far, all available on their Youtube channel. The episodes are very quick – too short for a plot, but long enough to make references to the prolific artist’s life. Reynolds’ co-creator, Caitlin Davis said, “We want to make the jokes broad enough so that everyone can get it, but also be specific enough that there is something in there for the art buffs.”
As of now, the episodes have consisted of Van Gogh being recognized as the red head from Modern Family, making a salad, and going to a club. So far they fall a bit short of comedy gold, but there is totally potential here. Perhaps…
- Van Gogh tackles Uber surge pricing
- Van Gogh masters the Instagram brunch photo
- Van Gogh confuses bespoke Brooklyn with time travel
- Van Gogh vs. a Soul Cycle instructor

The possibilities are endless, so follow The Van Gogh Show youtube channel to see what modern New York-centric scenarios the master artists finds himself in next.
