Maybe it’s because it’s unbearably hot out. Maybe it’s because we’re obsessed with ice cream. Regardless, these photos of melting ice cream treats are beautiful, nostalgic, and heart breaking – all at the same time.
Created by photographer Michael Massaia, these long-exposure images were created by carefully selecting which ice cream pops would yield the coolest looking design when melted. Massaia would place them on a black sheet of plexiglass and basically wait for them to melt before getting down to business.
“I would open the shutter on either a large format film camera, or a medium format digital camera, and capture the transformation using long exposures,” Massaia told HUFFINGTON POST
He goes on to explain that his motivation for the series was to capture images that could be an “analogue” for his childhood memories. What he does not explain, is how he dealt with the emotional anguish of watching so many delicious desserts go to waste.
