Cornell Tech, a section of Cornell University, is finally getting it’s own home on Roosevelt Island, New York. To help show off their new crib, they commissioned artist Peter Gerakaris to create an artwork that commemorates this historically groundbreaking feat for the school.
“Peter’s project is a magnificent example of the kind of creativity and innovation we plan to bring to our campus on a regular basis and we’re proud to feature a fellow Cornellian while doing so,” said Jane Swanson, assistant director of government and community relations for Cornell Tech. “This is one more step towards our commitment to bring public art to the Roosevelt Island community.”
Gerakaris’ work is inspired by “pop-botanic” as he calls it – his “postnatural” style of depicting nature produces somewhat of a hallucination for his viewers. This kaleidoscopic imagery lures viewers in, mysteriously hypnotizing your eyes and state of mind. From certain vantage points viewers can use 3-D glasses to look at the Cornell Tech piece, making you feel like you are a part of Gerakaris’ crazy, colorful jungle of geometric shapes and effervescent vibes.
Travel is an integral factor in his Gerakaris artwork; He parallels the potential he sees for Roosevelt Island (an underrated destination for most New Yorkers) with his past experiences in the islands of West Africa, Asia, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is hoped that Gerakaris’ installation will bring traffic as well as a new outlook on the small landscape, only a quick train ride away from Manhattan.
Gerakaris’ 1,000 square foot installation resembles that of his 2014 Bergdorf Goodman window display commissioned by Grey Area.
Tropicália opened to the public at the RIVAA gallery on June 20th and will be on view until July 31st 6-9pm.
Note: The artist shall donate a percentage of any sales garnered from this exhibition to the Cornell Annual Fund. This fund assists students with financial need, in addition to subsidizing academic travel stipends and other resources essential for a creative student to flourish.
