In addition to tying your shoes and always saying thank you, one of the first things your parents probably taught you was to never get into a car with a stranger. No matter how much ice cream they offered you, do not get in that car.
But what if that stranger is Tracey Emin and she is charmingly selling you artwork out of the back of her truck?
This Sunday in Margate in England’s South East, artists Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Peter Blake, and others will be selling their works at The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair.
The fair was started in 2004 in reaction to London’s increasingly commercialized art scene. Here, artists load a truck with their artwork and spend the afternoon mingling with their fans for a more personalized experience in purchasing art – a refreshing alternative to the the elitist structure of the traditional art market. Prices are shockingly affordable (ranging from £50 [$82] to £800 [$1,325]) and the event will boast food, beverages, and performances by local artists.
The fair will be open for one day only in the parking lot of Turner Contemporary, so buckle yourself in, no stranger danger here.
