When one thinks of the ivy-league university MIT, images of scientists, robotics engineers, and mathematicians come to mind…but what about artists? The institute actually hosts a world renowned arts program called CAST (Center for Art, Science & Technology), where students explore the intersection of creativity and technological innovation.
This week, the institution got an exciting donation from art collector and business woman, Dasha Zhukova. The one million dollar contribution will go towards developing The Dasha Zhukova Distinguished Visiting Artist Program, a one to two year artist residency. The recipients will collaborate with MIT professors and students to research and develop experimental uses of new mediums and technologies.
“After spending time at MIT and exploring its Center for Art, Science & Technology, I see it as a true hub of creativity—a virtual center that touches all areas of the arts, from the visual arts to architecture, design, music, the performing arts and more,” said Ms. Zhukova.
She continues, “I’ve always held an interest in science and technology and their powerful intersection with the worlds of art and design. My mother is a microbiologist and at the same time a lover of classical art, so for me the fusion of these worlds is where vital creativity and innovation take place.”
CAST has hosted over 31 visiting artist residencies to date since 2012, and worked with artists such as Anika Yi, Tauba Auerbach, Olafur Eliasson, Vik Muniz, Trevor Paglen, and Tomas Saraceno.
Earlier this year, Zhukova made news with the opening of the new Garage Museum for Contemporary Art in Moscow. She is also the editor of the biannual art and fashion publication, Garage Magazine.
