Say what you will about Jay Z, but the mogul is a man of his word. In an embarrassingly bad act of miscommunication, performance artist Marina Abramović recently accused Jay of breaking his promise to donate to her institute in exchange for using her concept in one of his performances. Jay’s camp responded by reading out a receipt of the transaction, prompting the Marina Abramović Institute (not the artist herself) to issue a public apology.
Appropriating Abramović’s 2010 performance piece at MoMA, “The Artist is Present,” Jay allowed guests to approach and interact with him as he performed his song “Picasso Baby” in 2013 at the Pace Gallery. The Guardian reports that a “substantial donation” was made to the Insitute, but that the artist herself had not been informed. It pays to be fully present, Ms. Abramović.
