Canadian artist Rob Gonsalves is bringing surrealism back with his fantastical paintings. These telescopic images, inspired by the magical realism of Magritte, seamlessly weave together desperate environments. For example, children playing on a fence suddenly ascend to the improbable height of a castles turret. Gonsalves takes commonplace scenarios and transforms them by gradients into dream realms.
Gonsalves is inspired by architectural design and the world of mathematics as well as his belief, “that magical and wondrous experiences are not confined to the subconscious.” His attention to technical detail combined with his ability to immerse viewers in his inner world makes for a striking series.
