Broken India, a new project by the Singapore-based tech company Limitless, shows the bleak reality that exists right beside the lush images touted by the tourist industry. These pieces are a direct jab at Beautiful India, a tourist site that displays only pristine images of landscape and architecture.
“While we have 5-star hotels on one side, we have slums on the other. While children are seen as the future of the country, they’re also forced into child labour,” The Limitless team told BUZZFEED.
Limitless is not insinuating, however, that the images created by Beautiful India are flat out lying. The caption “there are two sides to every story,” indicates that, yes, India is beautiful, but there’s so much more.
The use of the Instagram template is also a powerful way to speak to the hoards of Instagram users who can personally relate to the botched reality Instagram allows us to fabricate. By presenting a concept people witness in their everyday lives, Limitless effectively brings a holistic picture of India into the consciousness of people worlds apart.
