Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone is creating the largest Land Art installation in over 40 years along Interstate 15, just south of Las Vegas near the famous Jean Dry Lake. Seven Magic Mountains has been in the works for five years and will be on view starting next month, on May 11th, until May 2018. Massive towers of locally sourced boulders—inspired by meditative rock balancing—will stand up to 35 feet high and be painted in fluorescent hues, adding a shock of color to the Mojave landscape.
Invoking the intrinsic harmony of nature, Rondinone’s installation offers a sense of serenity in its elementals forms with a shade of existentialism through the abstract. The conspicuousness of the stones’ pigmentation calls back to the human touch of its own creation and the roads that lead to the capital of all glittery artifice that lies just 10 miles north: Sin City.
Art Production Fund and Nevada Museum of Art, the non-profit organizations presenting this installation, have started a Kickstarter campaign to complete “the final phases of fabrication: painting, transportation, and installation.” And it looks like they’re going to reach their goal with the nine days left to go; so expect to see Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains in all its glory in the Ivanpah Valley.
“Seven Magic Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between human and nature, artificial and natural, then and now.” – Ugo Rondinone
